Clipse ft. Kanye West – Kinda Like A Big Deal (2009)

i’m not what you would call a connoseiur of hip-hop, but there’s a small selection of artists in the game who i fiercely follow. lucky for me, two of them have collaborated on the first song from Clipse’s hotly anticipated 3rd outing ‘Til The Casket Drops.

Kinda Like A Big Deal roars out of the gate with a grizzled electric guitar and a booming low end courtesy of DJ khalil, while older brother Malice tears through the opening verse with a newfound rage-filled growl adding yet another level to his ominously posturing coke rap. Pusha T’s hook drips with his trademark guiltless bragadoccio until Kanye, free of anything resembling a melody or AutoTune, drops a playfully rambunctious verse that both fits right in with the Thornton brothers’ sneer and will have Kanye-heads remembering why they fell in love with him in the first place. Pusha T comes back for his final verse, with both his lyrics and ferocity reminding everyone that he and Malice continue to be the kings of drug rap. Clipse’s militant delivery and relentless lack of conscience reduce many of their more-famous peers vying for legitimacy in the coke rap game to a mere minstrel show. The brothers from Norfolk bring a dark, at times off-putting sense of brutal honesty that is impossible to fake and, unfortunately for the less-skilled also rans, impossible to imitate. the Clipse is back.
